This movie was released on August 15th, 2008 for USA and some other countries. When I was in the store, I was interested to this movie because of Kiefer Sutherland on the cover and Alexandre Aja, who was the Director of “The Hills Have Eyes”. I also heard that this movie is a remake from a Korean movie, but I never watched the Korean version so I don’t know which one is better. But it looks like a promising movie.
Plot
The scene is set in New York City. It is about a former NYPD detective Ben Carson trying to rebuild his life after long battle with alcohol, after killing a man in a shooting. He is hired to work as a night watchman of the remains of the Mayflower Department Store that was partially destroyed by fire many years ago. After a couple of nights, Ben is starting to see weird images in the mirrors. When his sister is found brutally murdered in her bathtub, Ben discovers that there is an evil force in the mirror. He doesn’t have any choice other than facing the evil by himself to save his life and his family.
Opinion
Even though it is not the best thriller movie of the year, it is still worth seeing because of its strong storyline and great effects. I was stunned with some scenes that are nicely shown in the movie, such as the scene in which Ben Carson’s sister is getting in the bath and begins to relax, when suddenly her reflection grips her jaw and begins to slowly tear it off. Another great scene is when Ben sees a burned woman in the changing room and he can only see her through the mirror. This movie shows some great effects and is smoothly created. I just don’t like the ending which is left unanswered. They let the audience create their own conclusion to what happens to our hero Ben.
Conclusion
It is still a good thriller movie for thriller-lovers out there. I didn’t catch the whole story the first time I watched it. So I decided to watch it again after a few months. I still got the intensity on my second time watching the movie and the story’s beginning became more clearly to me. Of course, others may have different feelings and thoughts.
